BHP301Electricity & Magnetism

Electricity & Magnetism (BHP301) is a foundational Core course of the CBCS B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics programme. It develops static electric and magnetic fields from Coulomb's and Biot–Savart's laws, formalises them via Gauss's and Ampere's laws, treats matter's dielectric and magnetic response, and culminates in Faraday's law, AC circuit analysis, and an introduction to Maxwell's equations — the same framework used later in Electrodynamics and Electromagnetic Theory papers.

  • Course objective: to analyze static and dynamic electric and magnetic fields, understand electromagnetic induction, and apply network theorems to practical circuits.
  • Assessment (typical CBCS scheme): Continuous Assessment 25–30, End Semester Examination 70–75, Total 100, Credits 6 (includes an associated practical/tutorial component).
  • Course outcome: by the end of the course, students should be able to apply Gauss's/Ampere's laws to symmetric charge/current distributions, analyze AC circuits using phasors and network theorems, and state Maxwell's equations and their physical meaning.
