Course: Electricity & Magnetism (BHP301)Programme: B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics — Semester III
Time: 3 HoursMaximum Marks: 75

General Instructions:

  1. All questions in Section A are compulsory.
  2. Attempt any two parts from each question in Section B.
  3. Attempt any two questions in full from Section C.
  4. Draw neat, labelled diagrams wherever necessary.

Section A — Short Answer (Compulsory)

  1. Define electrostatic potential and its relation to the electric field. (2 marks)
  2. What is meant by the polarization P of a dielectric? (2 marks)
  3. State Ampere's circuital law in integral form. (2 marks)
  4. Define self-inductance and mutual inductance. (2 marks)
  5. What is meant by resonance in a series RLC circuit? (2 marks)
  6. State the superposition theorem for linear circuits. (2 marks)
  7. Define the Poynting vector and state its physical meaning. (2 marks)

Section B — Attempt any two parts of each

  1. Derive the potential and electric field of an electric dipole at a point far from the dipole. (5 marks)
  2. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor completely filled with a dielectric. (5 marks)
  3. Derive the expression for the magnetic field on the axis of a circular current loop. (5 marks)
  4. Derive expressions for real, reactive and apparent power in a single-phase AC circuit. (5 marks)
  5. State and prove the Maximum Power Transfer theorem for a DC network. (5 marks)

Section C — Attempt any two questions in full

  1. Using Gauss's law, derive the electric field for planar, cylindrical and spherical charge distributions, clearly stating the symmetry argument used in each case. (10 marks)
  2. Discuss the behaviour of dielectric materials in an external electric field. Derive the boundary conditions at a dielectric interface and discuss energy stored in a dielectric-filled capacitor. (10 marks)
  3. Derive the magnetic field due to an infinite straight conductor and a solenoid using Ampere's law, and classify magnetic materials based on their susceptibility with suitable examples. (10 marks)
  4. Explain Faraday's law and Lenz's law of electromagnetic induction. Derive expressions for self and mutual inductance and discuss the energy stored in a magnetic field. (10 marks)
  5. Apply Thevenin's, Norton's and superposition theorems to a sample linear network with two independent sources, and discuss how Maxwell's equations unify electricity, magnetism and optics. (10 marks)
