MPY301Laser Physics

MPY301 Laser Physics is the flagship elective for M.Sc. students choosing the Electronics specialization. It develops laser physics from first principles (Einstein's A and B coefficients, population inversion, optical cavities) through the practical taxonomy of laser systems (atomic, molecular, solid-state, semiconductor, fibre), and finishes with two application-oriented units — laser spectroscopy for scientific research and laser materials processing for industry.

  • Prerequisite: undergraduate quantum mechanics and atomic physics (energy levels, transition selection rules) and basic electromagnetic wave theory.
  • Assessment: Class Test 12, Teacher's Assessment 6, Attendance 12, End Semester Exam 70 marks, Total 100.
  • Course outcomes: by the end of the course a student should be able to classify laser systems, explain the construction/working of representative lasers, and evaluate laser applications in spectroscopy, medicine and industrial processing.
