Advanced Mechanics & Properties of Matter Lab — User Documentation¶
Welcome to the companion user guide for the Advanced Mechanics & Properties of Matter Lab, an interactive virtual laboratory covering rotational dynamics, the elasticity of solids, the viscosity and surface tension of fluids, and oscillations, damping and acoustic methods at postgraduate level — 18 interactive experiments in all, plus a dedicated safety module and six industrial/applied-mechanics workshops (including three new practical-application experiments — a ballistic pendulum, a rolling-race incline, and gyroscopic precession).
This guide explains the theoretical background of every experiment and workshop in the simulator, walks through the procedure for using each interactive panel, and provides ready-to-use observation tables, graph instructions, and calculation/result templates so that the simulator can be used exactly like a physical laboratory session.
The lab is designed to extend and complement course topics such as BHP301 (Electricity & Magnetism) and the broader mechanics and properties-of-matter units of the UG physics curriculum, while several experiments (coupled oscillators, damping and resonance, and the ultrasonic interferometer) are pitched at PG level for students continuing into advanced mechanics and acoustics.
How to Use This Guide¶
Each experiment page follows the same structure: Aim → Theoretical Background → Governing Formulas → Simulator Controls → Procedure → Observation Table → Graph → Calculation → Result → Precautions → Viva-Voce Questions. Each workshop page follows the analogous structure for an industrial process rather than a measurement experiment.
